Obsession: Story Background

So, here’s the background for the short story Obsession, which came out some time before I started writing backgrounds on stories published in places other than my website.

Publishing Details

Obsession was published by Hub Magazine [External Link] in their 96th issue back in August 2009. You can find the actual issue here: [External Link]

Themes

Obession is basically about what the title says. However, in a moment of confession, this particular story originally started out as a Cone Zero, a story for an anthology call by Des Lewis for his Nemonymous series (Wikipedia article here: [External Link]). When I first read the description, my mind played a funny little pun on it.

(The pun may become obvious in the read through but I’m not going to announce it here. If you want to comment on it do so but, by extension, don’t read any comments on this page unless you’re ready to read such comments.)

As you can tell, Des didn’t pick up the story and I changed the title to something more suited to, well, every other market. There were some minor tweaks with the writing but this was more about how my writing improved in the time before the first “final draft” and the version accepted by Hub. These two versions were about 18 months apart, if you care to know.

Anyway, Obsession is about being so focussed on one thing that it costs you everything else in your life. And maybe a little bit more. Not something my butterfly mind really seems to have that much of a problem with!

Spoiler Notice

Just in case anyone wants to actually talk about Obsession, it’s best not to read any comments below unless you’re prepared to read any spoilers.
