Mousie’s A-Z of Thurnscoe: I

Mousie on the cow track

Dear All,
This is “the cow track”, the remains of a Roman road known as Icknield Street.
Love,
Mousie

I is for Icknield Street

There’s a known Roman road at the west end of High Street. It is believed to be an extension of Icknield (or Ryknild) Street, which runs from Gloucestershire to Derbyshire. (Wikipedia article: [External Link])

In Thurnscoe, it runs under three names. From South to North, these are: Southfield Lane, “the cow track”, and Clayton Lane.
