A Granted Wish: Story Background

Here’s the background for a story inspired in part by pack living but mainly by fairy stories.

Publishing Details

A Granted Wish is actually a novella (at 15,800 words) hosted by Fox Spirit Books [External Link] as part of their free fiction selection, as of November 2014. All their free fiction can be found here: [External Link].

Inspirations

A Granted Wish is an overlap of several things. The first and possibly most obvious inspiration is the idea of granted wishes – and the obvious “be careful what you wish for” corollory.

However, it also uses elements common to fairy wives, selkies, deer maids and swan maids. (I have pointed out I have a thing about animals that become people and vice versa before, right?) Except, in this case, the individual involved is a spear counterpart so it’s more of a fairy husband, deer youth or swan youth thing going on. (Selkies come in man and woman flavours, so that still stands.)

Theme

Yeah, for added bonus blogging material, I’m going to refute that the main theme is the aforementioned “be careful what you wish for”. Although that may be what you as a reader get from it.

For me, it’s about feeling lonely and alone – as we all tend to when we start to feel that everything is going badly – and not letting it seduce you into wrong choices. Of course, if you have your moment of weakness and take the option that seems nice and shiny until you see it in the morning light, you still have to learn to live with it.
