A re-jig of the Asperger’s page and some writing news.

The web-site update is basically corrections and some additional material on the Asperger’s Syndrome & Me – while reading through I realised how many typos I’d made and that I had missed a couple of relevant things out. But I doubt I’ve caught everything, yet, so watch out for more edits at some unknown point in the future!

The last few weeks, my writing has been focused on re-editing the first part of The Longest Night from the New Dryas world. I’m trying to get it into a decent tv script structure as a) I thought I’d try a different format and see if it helped me tighten the story-line up and b) there’s a competition on (Red Planet: [External Link]).

At the same time, I’m trying to get my writing head around that non-speculative fiction project I’ve mentioned before. It’s slow going as I think in spec fic terms when writing – and realising this got me thinking about my Asperger’s and thus the web-site update. My two other ongoing long projects, mentioned briefly before (stand-alones 25 Ways to Kill a Werewolf and The Three Guineveres) have been put on hold. Mainly because with work demands on my brain-space as well as three long projects on the go, I’m having difficulty progressing. I’d rather feel like I’m achieving something and decided to focus on one at a time. The non-spec fic is actually more of a struggle so I thought I’d wrestle with that first.

I’ve also detoured slightly in the last couple of months to produce a short story Cubus Mk I that is a quick look at AIs and human sexuality – as a result of Coyote Con [External Link] in May. The short is currently out looking for a new home but I’m undecided whether to put it on the site as a stand-alone or whether to add it as a separate page as it looks like there will be several versions (Mk II, Mk II, etc) if time ever allows. Similarly, 25 Ways to Kill a Werewolf is trying to make a bid for freedom in that it’s probably set in the Alex Jones world. Not involving Alex (so far) but another reason to leave it stewing for a while so I can see where it’s going more clearly.

The last call for Coyote Con [External Link] and some vague babbling.

Coyote Con closes this weekend but the transcripts will stay up for some time. Well worth a look and perhaps book the con into your diary for next year as all signs point to it being a repeat experiment.

In less exciting news, I’ve had another dreaded lurgy. This one appears to have been a cold and I think I’ll shake it off in time to enjoy the Spring Bank Holiday – and the weather’s good today, so who knows? Anyway, these means that anything that requires more than 5 minute bursts of concentration hasn’t been going so well. In other words, my writing has stalled. I’m hoping to do an overhaul today.

Genealogy, on the other hand, has the benefit of being something that can be done in small, discrete steps. So the TABERNER data I’m putting together for the next update is going very well. I may even have sorted out some tangles I’ve been dreading. That particular update / page rewrite should be up next week!

Sunday 23rd May, 2010

So, the usual plug for May: Coyote Con [External Link] continues, so please do take time to check it out. There’s only two weekends left! And more web-site related, I’ve been playing with my TABERNERs.

I’ve been adding a few little bits and pieces to both my line and the alternative line of TABERNERs of Wigan. Both files are getting somewhat unwieldy now – and it’s only going to get worse. They had lots of kids, after all. It’s actually quite heart breaking working through the records and seeing how many didn’t survive.

There may be another update in the near future, as it’s starting to look more like my line attach to the Ralph line through the Peter who married Ann GASKILL. But that’ll get looked at and sorted, as I say, in a couple of weeks or so.

As usual, thanks to the Lancs OPC [External Link] and Lancs BMD [External Link] teams for all their hard work that makes my hobby easy!

Continuing to plug Coyote Con [External Link], a political aside and some minor life-organising.

Coyote Con [External Link], the “First Annual 31 Day Digital Author Conference”, continues throughout the month of May. I attended yesterday (last night for the afternoon session as I’m on BST while the servers are on EST – I think) and will be attending tonight. Transcripts of the sessions are also being posted on their blog. It’s worth taking a look at to see what came up in conversation. As mentioned last week, one of the key forces behind the conference is the cast and crew of the good ship Drollerie Press [External Link], who also deserve a look in. (And I’m on their forums so please say “Hi!”)

For those of you who are a) not British, b) not aware of British politics or c) living under a rock, you may not know or care that we just had a General Election. Suffice it to say that we have a rather archaic vote counting system here in the UK and there are a number of people – myself included – who are not happy with it (“Take Back Parliament” [External Link]). If you’re interested in what it’s like to be a(n apparently lily-livered) Liberal in the UK, Amber Fox [Link Defunct] made some interesting posts on working out how to use her vote during the process and some commentary since. How does this change my life? Unfortunately, not a lot.

The next point: the About Me page has been rewritten slightly. The catalyst for this is a change in job description: I’ve gone from being a Leachate Technician (which I’m not going to explain) to Closed Sites Technical Manager (ditto) covering South Yorkshire. All within the same company, Waste Recycling Group (or WRG) [External Link]. I’m also in the process of buying a house for the first time, so expect to see disruption to update schedules in the next few months – once I have a moving date and actually have to do something!

And a quick update on how my projects are going:

  1. 25 Ways To Kill A Werewolf2 werewolves down, 23 to go.
  2. The Three GuineveresPart the 1st: 1 battle down, 12 to go.
  3. Not going to tell you!You know, I shouldn’t be teasing you about a project I’m not talking to you about…

Sunday 2nd May, 2010

A plug for Coyote Con [External Link] and a plug for me!

I hope the First of May passed more easily than folk tradition would suggest. It’s apparently an inauspicious day to start anything but there are at least two things I hope go well!

First of all, Drollerie Press [External Link] (whose forums I play around on and whom have been kind enough to publish one of my short stories) is one of the organisations involved in Coyote Con [External Link], the “First Annual 31 Day Digital Author Conference”, which runs for the month of May. Go have a look and have a natter. But be aware that server time is East Coast America.

And the plug for me. The podcast (that’s audio recording / broadcast to thee and me) of Half-Breed is up on Cossmass Infinities [External Link]. It’s episode 5 and read by Paul W Campbell, who has a lovely voice. (I’m not just saying that.) If you enjoy it, you might like to know it first appeared in print in Twisted Tongue, Issue 11 [External Link], which is available in hardcopy or pdf formats and is well worth a browse.

Addendum: Almost forgot the Great SteamPunk Debate [External Link], which also opened on 01/05/2010. Have a browse and enjoy that, too!
